REVIEW on REVIEW of a restaurant!

Image
Prior to our own restaurant reviews, we did a practice by reviewing review! The article:  BUBBA GUMP SHRIMP CO, RESTAURANT REVIEW: A CAVERNOUS, DEEP-FRIED, HOKEY SIMULACRUM The restaurant featured: BUBBA GUMP SHRIMP CO Picture:  https://www.amazon.co.jp/Forrest-Gump-Winston-Groom/dp/B00150GIG4 Notable features on the review: Its style is very ironic and rhetorical It has no photos It uses stars to assess different qualities As the restaurant is based on a famous movie, it references the story or famous lines It said very little about things that had been nice At first, it was puzzling if the author was trying to make compliments or complaints because of the style of the text. However, it was suddently ovbious when I saw the low graded stars. Although you wouldn't want to go to the restaurant after reading this review (which is fine, because it's not a promotion), you'd enjoy reading it quite a lot. We also did a review on a video review. However, it was well planed ahead,...

review: FOOD PLANET-Mali

Image
Today's post will be reviewing the chapter for Mali on the book FOOD PLANET ;)) Their expense on food is only less than 27$ a week, most of which is spent on grains. And very little on meat/fish, packaged food, etc. Here's the comparison of food culture between Mali and Japan. Something notable about culture in Mali is that, as it's an Islamic nation, polygamous relationships are fairly common. According to their religious rule, the husband is allowed to marry up to 4 women at the same time under the condition: he can treat all fis wives equally both financially, and emotionally.  The family they interviewed for the chapter was an example of such marriage. The husband: Soumana (46) The two co-wives: Fatoumana (33) and Pama (35) They have 9 children in the family in total.  The wives said: it's important for the husband to treat the wives equally. When the wives don't get along, it creates so many problems in the household. Sadly, that is happening a lot in their vil...

University Potato ? Japanese sweet potato treat!

Image
Today I'd like to share some Japanese snack I cook a lot recently! Although they are usually deep-fried, it also works even if you just fry it with minimum amount of oil, or even no oil if you have non-stick pan in your kitchen ;)) It's called Daigaku-Imo 大学芋 ;) Daigaku means university/college in Japanese. Imo means potatoes but here it indicates sweet potatoes! It’s named like such, in one theory, because of that it was popular among students in Tokyo back to Taisho-Showa period. (Familiar with Demon Slayer? The story was set in Taisho period) Here is a brief introduction: 1. Cut potatoes into bite size pieces 2. Soak them in water for 10 mins, then microwave it for 3-4 mins (500w) (Meanwhile, prepare the sauce! one table spoon of liquid sweetner, and a tea spoon of soy sauce. Mix them well~ I went for agave for the sweetner, but it's your choice) 3. Oil the pan with butter or vegan butter, or any kind of oil you have on your hand and heat the pan with medium heat 4. Fry ...

Poem Analysis ODE TO SALT

Image
To begin with, I'd like to say thank you to Sara for working with me on a presentation for the subject with me <3 Today I'd like to display an analysis on the poem we worked on: ODE TO SALT, a magnificent piece from Pablo Neruda about the enormous secret on salt! (derived from:  Uyuni Salt Flat | salt flat, Bolivia | Britannica  ) find the poem  here  ! Reason why we chose this poem: Salt is at the basis of every cuisine, probably the most common one, and for this very reason, we thought it would be the most approachable poem among the other food poems. However, when we started to analyze the poem, we realized that because salt is so common, we didn’t really know about it. We decided to take this opportunity to research and appreciate salt, an ingredient most of the time undervalued and took for granted.  Analysis:  ● Alliteration:In the poem you can see the tequnics alliteration is used, mostly in the first part. Alliteration creates musicality by ...

IN DIFFENSE OF FOOD AN EATER'S MANIFESTO by Michael Pollan ①

Image
For this semister I'd finish reading a famous food-related book, IN DIFFENSE OF FOOD: AN EATER'S MANIFESTO by Michael Pollan. In his book, he displays the simplest motto that anyone who wish to eat healthier can follow, in this ever confusing world regarding what is the right way to eat for our body. The motto is: EAT FOOD, NOT TOO MUCH, MOSTLY PLANTS      But what does that really mean? He's going to explain it to us with his observation on toxic neutritionism in the modern western society, especially this one country: U.S. Michael Pollan is an American jounralist who has been well known for the previous works such as THE OMNIVORE'S DILEMMA, A NATURAL HISTORY OF FOUR MEALS.    He is not a scientist himself, but the reason why his books are so accepted by so many people and given a place as siginificant educational materials when we talk about food, to eat, and the relationship with the environment of our planet is that: he acknowledges/...
